Asprey Antique Jewellery Box in Coromandel

Ref DL032
SOLD
This large Coromandel antique jewellery box, dating from the mid 1870's, was manufactured by Asprey’s of Bond Street, London.

The box is veneered in fine quality Coromandel wood, with brass edging to the entire perimeter, as well as inlaid brass stringing to the front and top. Sturdy brass handles are recessed into the sides of the box. There is an engraved brass monogram of 'T.P.B' inlaid into the lid, denoting the initials of the box's original owner.

The interior of the box is lined with emerald green velvet throughout, and has a large removable leather-bound tray with five compartments. There is a generous open compartment underneath this tray. To the rear of the box is a further full-width compartment.

A brass-framed mirror, with original curved beveled glass, is fitted neatly to the inside of the lid. This removable spring-loaded mirror has matching emerald green velvet ruching on its reverse, and conceals a leather-bound secret letter wallet behind.

The inlaid brass maker's plate on the back rim of the box reads: ‘ASPREY - MAKER - 166 BOND STREET LONDON’. This maker's plate pushes down to release the large spring-loaded bottom drawer, comprising three velvet-lined compartments and a full width ring/ cuff-link channel.

The bottom drawer has its own Bramah lock which is independent of the main lock.

Both Bramah locks are fully working and come with their original Bramah key.
