Antique Jewellery Box in Coromandel by Leuchars

Ref DL037
SOLD
This elegant antique jewellery box, veneered in figured Coromandel, edged in brass, and with ornate engraved side handles, dates from the late 1860's. This box bears an engraved brass coronet insignia signifying the nobility of its original owner. A coronet with four 'pearls' visible denotes a Baron or Baroness.

The interior of the box is lined and ruched with rich purple velvet. A leather-bound tray, comprising five velvet-lined sections, lifts out to reveal a large jewellery compartment underneath.

The interior brass corner mounts, concealed hinge covers and Bramah lock plates have all been highly decorated with fine hand engraving. The central maker's plate reads 'W. Leuchars - Manufacturer to the Royal Family - 38, Piccadilly, London'. William Leuchars was a highly respected London manufacturer and retailer who was subsequently acquired by Asprey's in 1888.

By pressing a concealed mechanism in the back velvet-lined wall, the maker's plate pops up to reveal a secret push button. This button operates the large sprung-loaded bottom drawer which comprises a further five velvet-lined compartments.

The Bramah lock is fully working and comes with its original Bramah key.
