Coromandel Dome Top Antique Jewellery Box

Ref DL038
SOLD
This impressive antique jewellery box, dating from the 1870's, is veneered in vibrant Coromandel and has a beautifully curved dome-top lid.

Unusually, the exterior brass edging to the entire perimeter has been decoratively engraved, and double brass stringing has been inlaid to the front, top and back of the box. The circular escutcheon inlaid into the lid has also been engraved with a matching design and monogram.

The interior of the box is lined and ruched with burgundy velvet, and partitioned into eight compartments with gold-tooled dividers. The gilded brass hinges, inlaid corner mounts and Bramah lock plates are beautifully engraved with floral detailing.

The hand engraving work is most remarkable on the gilded brass-framed mirror that sits neatly inside the domed lid. This removable spring-loaded mirror has a Coromandel frame with double brass strung inlay and inset velvet ruching on the reverse. A secret leather-bound letter wallet is concealed behind. The interior sides of the lid are veneered in Coromandel with matching double brass strung inlay.

A push-button to the left side of the box releases a full width side drawer, lined with velvet and divided into two compartments. A further push-button on the rear rim of the box releases the front drawer, containing a large jewellery compartment to the front, three smaller compartments to the rear, and a full width ring/ cuff-link channel. Extravagantly, even the framework of these drawers have been made from Coromandel.

The Bramah lock is fully working and comes with its original Bramah key.
