Antique Jewellery Box in Burr Walnut with Cantilever Mechanism

Ref DL043
SOLD
This grand antique jewellery box, veneered in Burr Walnut, was manufactured in 1895. The box has been bound with brass strapping and corner mounting to its radial edges, and then finished with brass strung outlining. The central inlaid and engraved brass monogram, 'H.S.M', denotes the initials of its original owner.

The interior of the box has been lined with purple velvet, and once initially opened, displays two front sections and a full width rear section. The front flap of the box drops forward, allowing the two front sections, both with four partitioned compartments and a ring/ cuff link channel, to swing out at right angles to the box. A lower level of five further velvet-lined compartments are revealed underneath. A central brass plate on the lower level can be pushed to release a large spring-loaded, velvet-lined front drawer beneath it.

A brass fronted, Burr Walnut framed spring-loaded mirror is fitted within the lid and can be removed or reversed to display a ruched velvet panel.

In keeping with a box of this great solidity and weight, the quality of the cantilever and piano hinges are exceptional. Matching elements of the exterior design, the interior rims of the box have also been inlaid with double brass strung outlining.

The front lock plate reads 'Chubb & Son - Makers - 57 St Pauls Churchyard'. The lock is fully working and comes with a key.
