Antique Jewellery Box in Coromandel by Leuchars

Ref DL051
SOLD
This antique jewellery box, veneered in finely figured Coromandel, edged in brass, and with ornately engraved corner mounts and side handles, dates from 1850. Bearing the monogram 'J.B' (referring to the family name of Blair), this box has spent its whole life in the Blair's Ayreshire mansion in Scotland.

The interior of the box is lined and ruched with dark purple velvet. The main area has three equally partitioned front compartments and a deep full width rear compartment. The front of the box drops forward to reveal a bottom drawer with an engraved recessed brass handle. This drawer contains four velvet-lined compartments and a ring/ cuff link channel. Directly above this drawer is a concealed drawer that opens by pushing down on the floor panel of the middle jewellery section above it.

The ruched velvet pad in the lid pulls forward to reveal a leather-bound letter wallet on the reverse, and allows access to a removable leather-bound free-standing mirror stored behind it. There is a maker's label in the letter wallet that reads 'W. Leuchars - Writing and Dressing Case Maker to the Royal Family - 38, Piccadilly, London'.

William Leuchars was a highly respected London manufacturer and retailer who was subsequently acquired by Asprey's in 1888.

The lock is fully working and comes with its original key.
