Asprey Antique Jewellery Box in Coromandel

Ref DL055
SOLD
This 1895 Victorian Coromandel box was manufactured and retailed by one of England's most celebrated companies, Asprey. The exterior of the box is veneered in figured Coromandel, finely edged in brass, and finished with two elegant brass recessed side handles.

There is an engraved 'M.C.W' brass monogram and coronet inlaid into the top of the lid. This particular coronet denotes the title of Countess, belonging to Mary Constance Wyndham (born 1862), Countess of Wemyss.

The top self-locking Bramah lock has an unusual concealed 'twist front' mechanism to disengage the lock, thus allowing the box to be opened. The lower Bramah lock for the drawer has a conventional mechanism, and the original key operates both locks.

The inside of the box is partitioned and lined with deep blue velvet, and the interior rims are inlaid with brass corner mounts. A spring-loaded, removable leather framed mirror in the lid reveals a leather-bound letter wallet behind.

The inside edge of the lid displays the embossed, gold-tooled maker's mark, 'ASPREY, 166 BOND STREET, LONDON'. A further maker's mark, engraved into a brass plate on the rear rim of the box, reads 'ASPREY, 166 BOND STREET.W'

The lower drawer contains a large velvet-lined jewellery area and full width ring/ cuff link channel.

Both Bramah locks are fully working and come with their original Bramah key.
