Antique Jewellery Box in Calamander, Attributed to Edwards

Ref DL057
SOLD
Dating from the late 1830's, this small/ medium sized antique jewellery box is veneered and cross banded with vibrant Calamander wood and edged with brass. Although unsigned, this box was certainly manufactured by Edwards of 21 King Street, Bloomsbury, London and features their patented metamorphic double opening design.

The self-locking Bramah lock with spring-loaded rods was especially created for this Edwards patent box, and with a clockwise turn of the key, the lid pops up for easy opening. The interior is lined and ruched with blue velvet and has a removable leather-bound writing surface concealing four jewellery compartments below.

Turning the key anti-clockwise in the Bramah lock, pops open the second tier. The box can now be opened to a full 180 degrees, revealing a further four velvet-lined jewellery compartments in the base section.

All the hallmarks of a fine Edwards' piece are present, including the patented concealed brass hinges and brass strung inlay to the interior rims.

The Bramah lock is fully working and comes with a key.
