This antique jewellery box was manufactured in the latter part of the 1860's by the highly respected English makers, Howell, James & Co. It is veneered in Amboyna, edged in brass and finished with two exquisitely shaped and hand engraved side handles. There are two Bramah locks that retain and share their original key.

The leather-bound interior of the box is finished with deep green velvet lining and ruching. A removable jewellery tray with fine brass handles reveals a further velvet-lined compartment below. The ruched velvet panel in the lid drops forward, presenting the gold tooled maker's mark, ' Howell, James & Co, 9 Regent Street'. Fitted to the inside of the lid is a brass inlaid Coromandel framed vanity mirror. This removable mirror is backed in Mahogany with a beautiful fretwork fold-out stand.

The rims of the box are inlaid with ornate brass corner mounts, and decorative incisions have been added to the hinge and lock plate screw heads.

The independently locking lower drawer pulls out to display an embossed leather-bound lidded surface. Underneath this surface is a large velvet-lined jewellery area and full width ring/ cuff link channel.

Both Bramah locks are fully working and come with their original Bramah key.
