Ref DL070
SOLD
This antique jewellery box, with its radial edges and brass strapping, is made from solid Cuban Mahogany and dates from the early 1830's.

Cuban Mahogany is one of the densest forms of Mahogany, renowned for its strength and resilience as well as its richness and depth of colour. Due to the desirability of this particular species of Mahogany, it became extinct by the end of the 1850's.

The leather-bound interior of the box is lined and ruched with green velvet and comprises a removable jewellery tray. Inlaid into the rear rim of the box is a brass maker's plate that reads, 'Palmer, Manufacturer to the Royal Family - No.1 St James's Street, London'.

The ruched velvet panel in the lid drops forward to reveal a concealed leather-bound letter wallet with a gold tooled design around the perimeter. Inside the letter wallet is a decorative maker/ retailer label for George Palmer. A removable leather-bound and gold tooled mirror is fitted to the underside of the lid.

The top escutcheon is engraved with an historic symbol of an arm casting out a pineapple attached to a rope, regarded as representing the offering of friendship, warmth and hospitality.

The Bramah lock is fully working and comes with its original Bramah key.
