French Antique Jewellery Box in Ebony with Brass Inlay by Alphonse Giroux & Cie, Paris
Ref DL073
SOLD
This grand French Ebony antique jewellery box was manufactured in the early 1840's and retailed by the firm of Alphonse Giroux & Cie, Paris.
The box has been edged and inlaid with ornately engraved brass, and finished with two engraved brass side handles and a large central shield surrounded with engraved foliate brass leaf flourishes.
The main interior of the box is lined with burgundy velvet and compliments the polished Rosewood veneer to the inside of the lid. A removable leather-bound and velvet-lined jewellery tray, comprising five separate compartments and two ring/ cuff-link channels, reveals a large velvet lined compartment underneath.
A brass inlaid Ebony fronted serpentine mirror is fitted to the underside of the lid. The mirror is backed in solid Mahogany with a hinged fold-out brass stand and brass hanging ring.
The full width lock plate features a 'long reach' locking action which is controlled by a custom manufactured Bramah lock with its original Bramah key. The top of the lock plate is engraved with 'Alp. Giroux & Cie Paris'.
Originally established in 1799 by Francois-Simon-Alphonse Giroux at 7 Rue du Coq-Saint-Honore in Paris, it was in 1838 that his son, Alphonse-Gustave Giroux, took over the business. Alphonse was responsible for making the business into one of the most exclusive and prestigious retailers in Paris at the time, and only his personal commissions would be allowed to bear the signature of his own name. Giroux relocated the business to 43 Boulevard des Capucines, Paris in 1857, where it remained until 1867 before being sold to the firm of Duvinage and Harinckouk.
