This large antique jewellery box was manufactured and retailed by one of the finest English box makers, Edwards, in the early 1830's. It is veneered in Brazilian Rosewood with brass edging, recessed brass side handles and a Bramah lock. Each side of the box has been inlaid with brass stringing and decorative brass corner mounts.

The top inlaid brass shield bears the crest of a swan/ cygnet (Cygnet Royal) with wings addorsed, gorged with a Ducal coronet affixed to a chain reflexed over its back. The motto underneath reads 'Fideli Certa Merces' (To the faithful there is certain reward).

The inside of the box is lined and ruched with emerald green velvet, and the lower interior rims are faced with brass. There is a removable velvet-lined tray with six compartmented sections and a ring/ cuff link channel.

The ruched velvet panel in the lid drops forward to reveal a concealed leather-bound letter wallet, displaying the embossed, gold-tooled maker's name, 'Edwards, Manufacturer to His Majesty. 21 King St Bloomsbury, London.'

The Bramah lock is fully working and comes with its original Bramah key.
