Ref DL096
SOLD
Dating from 1870, this large antique jewellery box in vibrant Coromandel was manufactured and retailed by Jenner & Knewstub. The lid of the box has been inlaid with an engraved monogram and coronet belonging to the Countess of Stair.
The interior of the box is lined and ruched with purple velvet. There is a velvet-lined tray with an inset, removable ring box that bears the matching monogram and coronet. Underneath the tray is a further velvet-lined jewellery section that also holds a leather-bound letter wallet with purple moire silk lining and matching monogram and coronet.
The internal walls of the lid section have been veneered in Coromandel and finished with double brass stringing. The ruched velvet panel in the lid, with matching Coromandel and brass strung framework, springs forward with the push of a concealed button, to reveal a mirror on the reverse. The right-hand hinge of the box has incremental ridges that adjust the lid angle, thus altering the mirror's viewing angle.
A push button on the rear rim of the box releases the independently lockable lower drawer. The drawer's front sections are fitted with a matching leather-bound travelling inkwell and matchbox/ striker, along with a small removable leather-bound pen tray. The rear section of the drawer is lined with purple velvet. The sides and base of the drawer have been constructed from solid Satinwood.
The main lock plate is engraved with, 'Jenner & Knewstub . 33 St James's St . London', along with, 'S. Mordan & Co - London'. The drawer lock plate is engraved with, 'Patent - S. Mordan & Co - London'. Both locks come with their individual keys.
The box retains its original leather outer travelling case that has been embossed with, 'Countess of Stair'.
