Antique Jewellery Box in Coromandel, by Asprey

This antique jewellery box is veneered in Coromandel and fitted with brass recessed side handles, an engraved central brass plate, and two Sampson Mordan & Co locks. It was manufactured and retailed by Charles Asprey during the early 1850’s.
The interior of the box is lined and ruched in purple velvet. There is a removable leather-bound tray with a velvet-lined area beneath, as well as a full width rear compartment.
The lower drawer, with its own independently locking Mordan lock, has two separated velvet-lined jewellery areas and a central full width ring/ cuff link channel.
An engraved brass maker’s plate at the rear of the box reads, ‘C. Asprey - Manufacturer - 166 Bond St’.
