Magnificent Antique Jewellery Box in Coromandel with Engraved Brass Inlay and Concealed Drawer

Dating from the early 1860's, this grand antique jewellery box is veneered in Coromandel and inlaid with engraved brass of floral, foliate and scrollwork design. The centrepiece on the lid consists of the initials 'M.B' encircled by a wreath bearing laurel leaves to one side and oak leaves to the other; laurel leaves symbolising peace/ and or triumph, whilst the oak leaves symbolise endurance and strength. The box is finished with brass edging, engraved brass stringing and ornate recessed engraved brass handles.
The interior of the box is faced with engraved brass to all its surfaces. It is lined with deep red velvet accompanying matching moiré silk. The front flap of the box drops forward to reveal an engraved brass inlaid drawer frontage. The large Satinwood drawer, with its polished interior, is independently lockable. Both the main lock and the drawer lock are fitted with working Hobbs & Co Patent Protector locks.
The ruched velvet panel in the lid is spring-loaded to reveal a solid Coromandel framed mirror on the reverse.
