Antique Jewellery Box in Rosewood with Foliate Brass Inlay, by Charles Essex

Dating from 1840, this antique jewellery box in Rosewood is inlaid with a delicate foliate brass design, accompanying radial brass edging, recessed brass side handles and a Bramah lock. The centre piece to the lid bears the engraved initials of ‘E.A’.
The interior is lined in green velvet and moiré silk, with the inner rims of the box inlaid with brass corner mounts and stringing. There is removable compartmented leather-bound tray with a full width ring/ cuff-link channel. There is a further velvet-lined compartment beneath this tray and to the rear of the box.
The independently lockable lower drawer comprises a large open lined area with an additional full width ring/ cuff-link channel. On the underside of the drawer is a paper manufacturer’s label belonging to Charles Essex, 79 Pantheon, Oxford Street, London.
