This antique jewellery box, dating from 1863, was manufactured and retailed by John Joseph Mechi and Charles Bazin of Regent Street, London. It is veneered with Calamander, inlaid with brass stringing, and finished with quadrant brass edging and recessed brass side handles.

The partitioned interior is lined with red moiré silk and velvet. Each internal wall, floor and compartment of the main section is lightly padded.

A brass plate to the rear rim of the box is engraved with, 'Mechi & Bazin. Makers London'.

The box has been fitted with two consecutively serial numbered Chubb patented locks. The main lock is a ‘Detector’ lock which was designed to be impossible to pick or open without its dedicated key; furthermore it has the ability to alert its owner to any unauthorised access attempts. The locks are fully working and retain their original Chubb key.

The independently lockable lower drawer contains a large velvet and silk-lined section.
