Antique Jewellery Box in Coromandel, by Leuchars & Son

Ref DL255
SOLD
This antique jewellery box, veneered in vibrant Coromandel with brass edging, was manufactured and retailed by William Leuchars & Son during the late 1870’s.

The interior of the box is lined with blue velvet, moiré silk and Morocco leather. The leather-bound jewellery tray lifts out to reveal an open velvet-lined area beneath. Five further compartments are fitted to the rear of the box. A brass plate to the rear rim of the box is engraved with, ‘Leuchars & Son. 38, 39 Piccadilly. London’.

The ‘Leuchars Patent’ stamp on the main lock refers to its design whereby the front aperture can be twisted clockwise using the key (or indeed one’s thumb and forefinger), thus disengaging the locking mechanism and allowing the box to be opened; by simply closing the box, the locking mechanism will automatically re-engage. A full anti-clockwise turn of the key will lock the front aperture's twist mechanism in place; in this state the box is completely deadlocked.

The independently lockable lower drawer contains a large velvet and silk-lined compartment and a full width ring/ cuff link channel.

Both locks are fully working and come with their original key.
