Dating from 1813, this large antique jewellery box was manufactured and retailed by Wells & Lambe of Cockspur Street, London. It is veneered with kingwood, inlaid with a brass greek key perimeter design, and finished with scribed right-angle brass edging and recessed brass side handles.

The interior, lined with blue moiré silk and matching velvet, is fitted with a deep compartmented leather-bound tray that can be removed to reveal a large velvet-lined area underneath. There is a further full width velvet-lined compartment to the rear of the box. The internal rims are inlaid with scribed brass inlay accompanying 'E. Wells & Co Patent' concealed hinges.

A leather-bound panel set centrally within the lid section bears the gold tooled mark of, ‘Wells & Lambe - Manufacturer - 29 Cockspur Street - London’.

The independently lockable lower drawer contains a large compartmented velvet and silk-lined area.

The Bramah patent lock and lower drawer lock come with their original keys.
