Asprey Antique Jewellery Box in Calamander

Ref DL018
SOLD
This antique jewellery box was manufactured and retailed by Asprey's of London during the 1860s.

The exterior of the box is veneered in fine Calamander wood with cross-banded Calamander borders to the front and top. The entire box is edged in brass, with two sculpted brass recessed side handles.

‘ASPREY'S PATENT' is stamped around the circumference of the self-locking Bramah lock aperture. 'Asprey's Patent' refers to the lock opening mechanism, whereby the front aperture slides to the right, releasing the lock and allowing the box to then be opened.

The interior of the box, lined and ruched with black velvet, is partitioned into five compartments. The middle compartment has a secret floor that lifts out to reveal three further velvet-lined sections underneath.

The interior rims of the box are decoratively veneered in cross-banded Calamander. An embossed leather panel on the inside of the lid bears the gold tooled maker's name, 'ASPREY. MANUFACTURER TO HER MAJESTY. 166 BOND ST.

The Bramah lock is fully working and comes with its original Bramah key.
