Coromandel Antique Jewellery Box by George Betjemann & Sons
Ref DL071
SOLD
This antique jewellery box, veneered in Coromandel and edged with brass, dates from the early 1870's and was manufactured by one of the finest English cabinetmakers, George Betjemann & Sons of 36, 38 & 40 Pentonville Road, London.
The internal mechanism, patented by Betjemann & Sons, operates so that as the lid of the box raises open, the front panel automatically opens out simultaneously.
The interior of the box is lined and ruched with purple velvet, complemented by the gilt brass interior fittings. There is a recessed gilt brass plate set into the rear rim of the box that works on a 'rocker' button mechanism; pressing the left side of the plate releases a concealed top drawer with a leather-bound interior, and pressing the right side releases a concealed lower drawer with a velvet lined interior and full width ring/ cuff-link channel. Both drawers are constructed from solid Satinwood with intricately dove-tailed joinery. The lid of the box holds a leather-framed mirror which springs forward, with the push of a concealed button, to reveal a ruched velvet panel on the reverse, as well as a secret letter wallet behind.
The Bramah lock, stamped with 'G. Betjemann & Sons - London', is fully working and comes with a working key. ... Read More
