French Antique Jewellery Box in Ebony with Yellow & Rose Brass Inlay

Ref DL260
SOLD
Dating from the late 1830's, this French antique jewellery box is veneered in ebony and inlaid with engraved yellow and rose brass of a foliate and scrollwork design. The technique of using bi-colour brass creates a perfect separation of the elements within the design. Both sides of the box are inlaid with a decorative brass design accompanying engraved recessed brass handles.

The interior is lined with burgundy velvet and edged with matching moiré silk. The internal rims are inlaid with triple brass stringing and circular finials.

The full width lock mount, fitted with a Bramah patent lock, bears the engraved manufacturer’s mark of, ‘Hip-te [Hippolyte] Devillers, 41 Rue Neuve St Augustin’. The lock comes with its original gold plated key.

A freestanding rosewood and brass inlaid mirror frame is fitted to the underside of the lid. The reverse of the frame is made from solid flame mahogany with a recessed solid brass stand and folding wall hook; the stand is hinged in four places to achieve the perfect viewing angle.
