Antique Jewellery Box in Rosewood with Spring-Loaded Mirror Mechanism, by David Edwards
Ref DL265
SOLD
Dating from 1821, this large antique jewellery box is veneered in rosewood, edged and inlaid with brass, and finished with recessed brass side handles and a Bramah lock. Although unsigned, this box was certainly manufactured by David Edwards - it bears all of his unmistakable design hallmarks.
The inside of the box is lined with red velvet, moiré silk and Morocco leather. The top leather-bound and velvet-lined jewellery tray lifts out to reveal a secondary leather-bound tray below. With both trays removed, a further velvet-lined compartment in the base section becomes accessible.
This box cleverly masks a very unusual and ingenious mechanism within; a push button to the rear of the box deploys a concealed spring-loaded mirror from the exterior of the lid section. The rosewood and satinwood mirror frame can be raised fully into position then swivelled accordingly to gain the perfect viewing angle.
The Bramah lock is fully working and comes with its original key. ... Read More
