Antique Jewellery Box in Coromandel with Extending Side Trays and Spring-Loaded Rising Central Tray

Ref DL278
SOLD
Dating from the early 1860’s, this large antique jewellery box in Coromandel is edged and inlaid with brass, and fitted with recessed brass handles and a central brass plate to the lid.

The interior of the box is lined with purple velvet and moiré silk. The internal rims have been faced with solid nickel and finished with decoratively engraved scrollwork. Two push buttons allow the top trays to extend outwards revealing a sunken central compartmented tray below. A push button to the rear rim of the box enables this spring-loaded central tray to rise automatically until it rests level with the neighbouring trays.

This box hides two secret compartments within its structure; with the central tray lowered back into its sunken position, and with either the left or right tray fully extended, the opposing tray can be slid beyond its normal resting position to reveal a concealed jewellery section below.

A further push button to the foremost rim of the box deploys a solid rosewood-constructed lower drawer.

The Bramah lock comes with its original key.
