Antique Jewellery Box in Calamander with Spring-Loaded Mirror Mechanism, by David Edwards

Dating from 1822, this large antique jewellery box is veneered in calamander, edged and inlaid with brass, and finished with recessed brass side handles and a Bramah lock. It was manufactured and retailed by one of the finest English cabinet makers, David Edwards.

The interior of the box is lined with blue velvet, moiré silk and Morocco leather. The leather-bound jewellery tray lifts out to reveal a large velvet-lined compartment beneath.

This box cleverly masks a very unusual and ingenious mechanism within; a push button to the rear of the box deploys a concealed spring-loaded mirror from the exterior of the lid section. The ebony and satinwood mirror frame can be raised fully into position and then swivelled accordingly to gain the perfect viewing angle.

The lower rims of the box are faced with brass; the foremost is engraved with the maker’s mark of ‘D. Edwards. Manufacturer - To His Majesty - 21 King Street. Holborn.’

The Bramah lock is fully working and comes with its original key.
