Antique Cigar Box in Burr Walnut by Betjemann & Sons
Ref DL308
SOLD
This antique cigar box, veneered in burr walnut and edged with brass, was manufactured by Betjemann & Sons and retailed by John Collard Vickery in 1900. The lid is inset with a brass plate bearing an engraved monogram beneath a baron’s coronet.
The interior is veneered in coromandel and lined with cedar wood. Cedar wood was most commonly used in cigar boxes due to its ability to insulate and regulate temperature, absorb and release humidity, repel tobacco beetles and worms due to its strong woody smell, and it is indeed this smell that can permeate and enhance the aroma of the cigars themselves.
The front flap of the box drops forward to reveal three removable silver ashtrays fitted within. These ashtrays, engraved with matching monograms and coronets, are hallmarked for 1900 and were manufactured by J. Batson & Son. Their undersides bear the retailer’s mark of, ‘J. C Vickery 179 - 181-3 Regent St. W’.
The top two partitioned sections hinge out at right-angles to the box. The deep central compartment beneath has two adjustable partitions. There is a removable full width tray to the rear of the box that houses two hinged match vesta cases with interior striker plates; their silver lids are engraved with matching monograms and coronets.
A retailer’s plate set within the front flap is engraved with , ‘J. C Vickery - To Her Majesty The Queen - 179. 181. 183 Regent St. W’.
The Bramah lock retains its original gold plated key. ... Read More
