Antique Dressing Case in Burr Walnut with Silver Fittings, by F. L Hausburg

Ref DL311
SOLD
Manufactured and retailed by F. L Hausburg, this antique dressing case is veneered in burr walnut with brass edging, inlay and decorative recessed side handles. A large ornate brass plate, centrally inset to the lid, bears the engraved initials of ‘JSW’.

The interior, lined in a combination of red Morocco leather and matching velvet, contains ten hobnail cut-glass vanity bottles and jars, as well as a travelling inkwell; each of these have decoratively engraved and engine-turned silver lids bearing the maker's mark of Thomas Johnson, and are hallmarked for London 1852. A set of writing, sewing and vanity tools are fitted within a small centrally mounted tray.

The ruched velvet panel in the lid drops forward to reveal a concealed compartment that contains a leather-bound letter wallet; two gold tooled maker’s marks within this compartment read ‘F. L Hausburg - Manufacturer - Liverpool’.

The independently lockable lower drawer opens to display a panelled leather writing surface with elaborate gold tooling around the perimeter; the panels open to a compartmented section below lined with its original ivory coloured silk.

The box is fitted with a Chubb Detector lock along with a Barron’s Patent lock to the drawer.
