Antique Jewellery Box in Calamander, by Asprey

Manufactured and retailed by Asprey in the mid-1860’s, this antique jewellery box is veneered in Calamander and finished with quadrant brass edging.
The two self-locking Bramah locks are stamped with ‘ASPREY'S PATENT' around the circumference of the front aperture. 'Asprey's Patent' refers to the design of the lock, whereby the front aperture slides to the right or downwards, disengaging the locking mechanism and thus allowing the box to then be opened.
The interior of the box, lined with a combination of blue Morocco leather and velvet, is fitted with a removable leather-bound jewellery tray. Beneath the tray is a large leather and velvet-lined area that accompanies a rear partitioned section.
An embossed leather panel on the inside of the lid displays the gold tooled maker's mark of, 'ASPREY. MANUFACTURER TO HER MAJESTY. 166 BOND ST W.
The spring-loaded lower drawer contains a leather-bound lidded surface, underneath which is a large velvet and moiré silk lined area and a full width ring/ cuff link channel.
