Antique Jewellery Box in Burr Walnut with Concealed Drawers, by Asprey

Manufactured and retailed by Asprey in 1860, this large antique jewellery box is veneered in burr walnut with Indian ink enhancements.

The self-locking Bramah patent lock is stamped with ‘ASPREY'S PATENT' around the circumference of the front aperture. 'Asprey's Patent' refers to the design of the lock, whereby the front aperture slides to the right, disengaging the locking mechanism and thus allowing the box to then be opened.

The architecturally-inspired, partitioned interior is lined with green velvet, moiré silk and Morocco leather. The front flat drops forward to reveal a hinged glass lidded jewellery display section.

A brass plate on the rear rim of the box is engraved with 'Asprey, 166 New Bond St. London'; pushing down on this plate deploys the lower spring-loaded drawer. The top drawer opens manually using its recessed brass handle.

The spring-loaded ruched velvet panel in the lid can be reversed to display a leather-bound mirror.

The lock plate is engraved with 'Asprey, 166 New Bond St.'
