Antique Jewellery Box in Coromandel with Cantilever Mechanism

This antique jewellery box was originally manufactured and retailed in the late 1880s by the highly respected London maker and jeweller, Charles F Hancock, Son & Co. The vibrant coromandel wood, brass edging, brass recessed handles, along with its impressive mechanism and size, make this one of Hancock's finest private commissions.

The interior of the box is partitioned and lined in black velvet, contrasting beautifully with the original bright gilded brasswork.

The front of the box drops forward to allow the top two compartments to cantilever out at right angles. These two compartments have secret drawers within that pop out when their concealed floor triggers are pressed. Once fully opened up, the central and rear areas of the box are fully revealed and accessible.

The gilt brass maker's plate that reads ‘C.F Hancock Son & Co - 152 New Bond Street, London W.’ pushes down to release a secret spring-loaded front drawer, which is divided into six velvet-lined compartments.

The lock is fully working and comes with a key.
