Leather Outer Cases

Valuable dressing cases and boxes were vulnerable to damage during travel, particularly when carried in carriages or transported by ship. For additional protection, many could be supplied with a bespoke fitted outer case. 

These protective cases were generally made from thick, structured leather and closely followed the shape of the box within. Their interiors were commonly lined with sheepskin to reduce abrasion and protect polished veneers, brasswork and other decorative surfaces.
