Brass Stringing

Thin, narrow strips of brass were sometimes inlaid into the surface of a box as a decorative feature. Commonly arranged as single or multiple parallel lines, the stringing often followed the perimeter of the exterior brass edging or was set into the interior rims of the case. 

Unlike brass edging or binding, which could also provide protection and reinforcement, brass stringing was primarily decorative, adding fine linear detail and contrast to the surrounding veneer.
